Opening remarks.

NASA’s Langley Research Center is transforming into an “Airspace-Enabled Smart Center” through the pervasive use and safe integration of unmanned and autonomous aircraft, establishing this center as a comprehensive flight research environment and paving the way for future Smart Cities. The Langley campus hopes to serve as an example to other institutions and localities interested in pursuing Advanced Air Mobility initiatives and embracing Smart City technology for the overall enhancement of society.

Performance management in government is at a crossroads. With the advent of big data and advancements in technology and analytical tools, leaders have the opportunity to measure and track a wider variety of internal and external indicators on a more timely basis. Public leaders require new vision and capacity alongside these tools to design and manage innovative knowledge-building systems. With a background in both medicine and biomedical engineering, Dr. George Akingba, Vascular Surgeon at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C., shares a passion for finding innovative engineering solutions to solve clinical challenges. This focus led him to develop a Retraction Housing Device (RHoD) that uses three dimensional printing technology, effectively reducing interventional procedural time, sedation requirements, overall associated costs, and indirectly reducing radiation exposure.

Accessibility is the foundation for inclusion, diversity and equity within the federal government, including digital accessibility. This past year, Maroya Faied and DOI’s Office of Natural Resources Revenue were tasked with the critical and daunting responsibility of remediating all onrr.gov content to ensure such accessibility. Since completing this work, they have mapped out recommendations, best practices and tangible steps that other agencies can follow to ensure 508-compliance within their own content.
