Brig General Paul joined the Canadian Armed Forces in June 1994 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and Economics from the Royal Military College of Canada, Kingston, Ontario in 1998.

After completing Aerospace Controller training, BGen Paul was posted to 21 Aerospace Control & Warning Squadron at Canadian Air Defence Sector in North Bay, Ontario. During his time in North Bay he deployed as a Mission Director in the NATO Combined Aerospace Operations Centre in Vicenza, Italy in support of NATO operations in the Balkans. Posted to the 964th Airborne Air Control Squadron at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City in 2001, BGen Paul deployed on Operation Enduring Freedom in support of operations in Afghanistan. Prior to departing Oklahoma Col Paul successfully completed the Fighter Weapons Instructors Course at 410 TFS Cold Lake, Alberta and obtained a Master of Arts degree in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma.

In 2005, BGen Paul joined the Canadian Forces Joint Headquarters in Kingston, Ontario where he deployed to Pakistan with the Disaster Assistance Response Team in response to the devastating earthquake which hit the region. Moving again in 2006, BGen Paul joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces Command (CEFCOM) in Ottawa as the Adjutant to J3 Operations and Senior Watch Officer in the CEFCOM Command Centre. BGen Paul assumed Command of 42 Tactical Control Radar Squadron at 4 Wing Cold Lake in 2007 followed by attendance at the Joint Command and Staff Program at Canadian Forces College in 2010. Serving as the 1st Canadian Air Division/Canadian NORAD Region A7 from 2011-2013 BGen Paul then assumed command of Canadian Detachment Eastern Air Defense Sector in Rome, New York.

Returning to Ottawa, Ontario in 2016 BGen Paul served as the Deputy J3 at Canadian Joint Operations Command until moving in 2017 to become the Director Space Coordination under the Director General Space. BGen Paul deployed as Air Task Force Commander Iraq on Op IMPACT in 2018 followed by a posting to NORAD-NORTHCOM HQ as Chief of Staff for Canadian Element NORAD, and NORAD and USNORTHCOM Deputy Director J8. A recent graduate of the USAF Air War College in Montgomery Alabama, BGen Paul took on the role as Special Advisor to the Vice Chief of Defence Staff in June 2021. BGen Paul recently assumed his current role of  Deputy Commanding General, Transformation, Space Operations Command, at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Throughout his career BGen Paul has been supported by his wife Jennifer, and daughters Addison and Taylor.
